Custom Pull Quotes

Posted January 18th, 2007 by Mike Cherim

I have added custom pull quote functionality for the theme users.

Beginning with build number B20070511 I have added custom pull quote functionality for the theme users. This feature will be seen on the single post pages as well as the excerpts, but the styling is slightly different. It’s rather easy to do and it is backwards-safe so you don’t have to implement these steps on older posts unless you choose to. Here’s what you do:

Adding a Custom Pull Quote

  1. Create a new Post or Page.
  2. Before (or afterwards if going back to do this to older Posts/Pages) scroll down to the “Custom Fields” section.
  3. If doing this for the first time, write the word “pullquote” in the Key input. You must use the word as written. (Not the first time?)
  4. Then, in the small textarea to the right of that input, enter your desired pull quote from said post. (Be sure not to enter quote marks as this would cause problems).
  5. Click the “Add Custom Field” button.
  6. Publish or Save your Post/Page.

Not The First Time?

After you do this once, the how-to changes slightly. Instead of writing in the word “pullquote” in the Key input, simply use the pull-down (select) to the left of that input. The word will appear in that menu making this small task even easier.

Backwards Safe

If no pull quote is specified, it simply will not appear. No errors, no problems. Do note, though, if you float an image at the top of the post (see example), don’t use this pull quote feature.
