Contact Form Plugin Option

If you’d like to have another option regarding the contact form included now you can. Mike Jolley and I just created a nice Contact Form Plugin for WordPress (see the working demo with its “SeaBeast” theme) that you can apply as you would any other plugin instead of using the one I included with this theme. There are advantages to doing this (and no disadvantages that I can think of), as follows:

As it relates to the SeaBeast theme specifically, this contact form offers:

  • Enhanced accessibility and more comprehensive security.
  • It’s part of WordPress itself so allows greater flexibility.
  • Has more features with simpler configuration.
  • Performance measuring spam/exploit counter.

To use this plugin, simply do the following:

  1. Download it, install and configure it as per the instructions included with the plugin.
  2. Create a new “Contact Page” using your WordPress admin.
  3. Enter the page’s URL in the plugin’s configuration.
  4. In the SeaBeast’s theme USERS_CONFIG file, answer “no” to the first variable question in Section 2 of 6:
// Enable or Disable Contact Me/Us Page and all associated links
        $enable_form=        "no";

  5. Delete the old form file contact.php from the SeaBeast theme directory.
  6. Then on the plugin’s “Styling” page, choose the “SeaBeast” theme but know that you may want to modify it with the plugin’s included editor. If you don’t like this, you should be able to select “none” from the theme’s list, but you may want to make a modification or two on your style sheet or add a couple things to the custom style sheet.

This file, USERS_FUNCTION, is yours for adding such blog add-ons as flickr, Skype, and other non-WP goodies. Do try to keep items added to this section at around 120 pixels or less in width to prevent the sidebar from slipping in IE on 800x600 resolution monitors. Need to add CSS styles for items in this box? Easy, use the USERS_CSS file to do so. Then validate!

Blogger’s FarBar

This file, USERS_FARBAR, is yours for whatever you wish. Text in simple paragraphs, <p></p> lists, whatever. This is a liquid-width column. That said, you should to keep whatever — fixed-width item — below 120 pixels wide. Again, that concerns fixed-width items, self-forming, liquid items like text in paragraphs will adjust its own width. If you must place a slighter wider item, you can use the USERS_FUNCTION or USERS_SIDEBAR file to do so, but do note that that too should remain thin at only 162 pixels as it is a fixed-width column.

Added Headings!

You can also add headings in these user files. As many as you like. On and on she goes, where she stops. nobody knows! Do remember, though, in these file you have to use proper XHTML. Of course, this content can serve as example to you. Need even more help? Well, professional help is available.
