Theme Accessibility

Web accessibility is a rather important issue. And if you are somehow challenged by the Internet — whether it be the result of a disability or a slow connection — the issue becomes critical. But if a minority user can access and use your content is just part of the story. There are other reason for those who don’t care about the minority user: SEO. If your site is more accessible to human visitors, it is also more accessible to search engine spiders or robots (’bots). The whole why accessible sites are built are completely inline with what’s required to be found on the web. It’s all good, and something you really should want from your theme.

With this theme, the numerous common accessibility challenges or barriers will removed with these added features:

Semantic Build
The smart and proper use of elements and attributes on the page. A table-free design. These things go a long way towards making a high quality site.
Style Sheets
This theme uses cascading style sheets or CSS for styles and positioning. This is by far the preferred and quality method of design. To help visitors, this theme has additional style sheets. Specifically a portable CSS for small devices and other equipment is offered as well as a print-specific CSS.
Resizable Text
Re-sizing text is a browser function, On some browsers, though, like Internet Explorer (IE), this can be disabled by using fixed font sizes — versus relative sizing. On this site the text can be enlarged. Moreover, the way the theme is built, text enlargement is not going to significantly break the design and thus the site remains usable.
Image Replacement
If you see an image with text, that text is available in a way understood by assistive technologies like screen-readers, and search engines. In other words the text equivelent is available in that location or — in the case of the “Read” icons — a location near the image and in the link’s title attribute.
Jump Link Navigation
With styles off or when using a device that doesn’t support them, there are a set of links avialable which allow users to jump directly to various parts of the page. These links are also available to most keyboard users. Try them for yourself by using your keyboard to Tab onto the page. The links should appear just under the masthead image on the left-hand side of your browser.
Content Ordering
I ordered the content in a top-down way. In other words the main content comes first, followed by the Sidebar, Farbar, then footer. You can see this by selecting the Portable style sheet if you can or by turning styles off altogether.
Cross-Broswer Support
I made sure this theme is forwards as well as backwards compatible. I did quite a bit of testing. On my Disclaimer page I provide details about the User Agent Support in some detail.
Language Support
The language is well-delacared in the head of the document (you can modify this) and even the letter direction is specified — left-to-right — to help ensure proper use and document comprehension.
The templates and includes with this theme will all produce valid, properly formed XHTML mark-up and CSS style information to ensure better stability and usability.
Link Hover & Focus
All links feature hover effects so users will be more aware of link activation status and pointer target. Morover focus effects are used to further enhance the link activation status and location awareness to keyboard users.
Form-Field Hover & Focus
The forms all employ subtle hover/rollover and focus effects to help users locate their position of a page and see object activation status (hovering, then focusing, etc.).
Use of Script
This theme does not in any way replay on client-side scripting like JavaScript. The sole JavaScript file that comes with the theme serves a solitary purpose: To make form-field hover and focus work in IE and AOL versions as it does on all other browsers. The form colors (as delivered) are perfectly adequate for normal use with out the script for IE.
Link Disctiction
Excerpt-to-post links were changed so each link, each leading to a different target, have a unique link name. In other words, instead of “Read More” now the links will read “Read (name of post).
Abbreviations Explained
Abbreviations, acronyms, and definitions are all marked (differently than links) and available on the first instance on any applicable page. The abbreviation element is not supported by IE, but facility was made to force support.
Accessible Form Results
Upon making a contact form submission, users will be sent directly to the result, be it failure or success. Normally a user would be sent to the top of the page of the results message. To enhance user experience, returning the user to the result itself is a huge improvement.
