What are your thoughts about “Breaking Barriers?”

I published an article at Accessites.org entitled “Breaking Barriers” and decided to make this post so public comments could be taken in response to the piece should readers so desire.

What are your thoughts about “Breaking Barriers?”

An excellent article and a novel (but more technically correct) way of looking at it Mike. You need to have a ‘fix’ for whatever accesibility you are going to break by ‘designing’ the page.

In theory thinking like this should make it easier to achieve an accessible website, when you decide to style a certain part of the page, you should also be thinking of the workaround to make it accessible again.

Competely off topic, but I like the nice simple, informative graphics you use.

The most fundamental element of accessibility to sighted visitors is the one most universally given little or no consideration, good legibilty. It’s really disheartening to see legibility get at most lip service from most of those professing understanding of good accessibility, or worse, from those promoting it.

Good legibility starts with these basics applied to the main content:

    1-visitors’ preferred text size, and
    2-visitors’ preferred font-family, and
3-good line length relative to text size, and
    4-good contrast

Anything else means you’re not designing for web users. If they can’t read it without pain, or at all, nothing else matters to them.
