About the Beast

See Mike Cherim's Flickr Pics Green Beast is the name of my first company’s mascot — from an 18th century illustration. It has quite the history which I explain in more detail on my first company’s “History of the Beast” web page. Somewhere along the way I took the name for myself. My given name, however, is Mike Cherim. I was born in 1962 which makes me old as dirt to some, and just a kid to others. I’m married, and have been for nearly half my life, all to the same woman. I call her Gee, short for Georgann. She’s wonderful. She works for my first company, basically running the show nowadays. She does a great job of it, too. I also have two kids, both teenagers approaching adulthood. I love them both and both make me quite proud.

I live in Nottingham, New Hampshire (United States), and have for a very long time. That wasn’t always the case, though. I grew up and spent the first chunk of my life on the move as I had an United States Air Force upbringing. Due to this, I was blessed with the myriad experiences of world travel. Moreover, I spent six years as a non-commissioned officer in the Air Force myself, thus extending my travel opportunities. I’ve lived in Japan and Italy, and I’ve visited every state in the United States with exception only to Washington state and Oregon. Someday, perhaps, I will pay those states a visit as well, thus completing my domestic travels.

Sea Beast My passions, besides my family and friends, my white German Shepard dog, running my first company — which I’ve yet to tell you about but I will — include writing (mostly stuff along the lines of what I like to read most, namely Stephen King), web design and imagery, photography, four-wheeling, fishing, and boating. The inset photo is of my classic 19-foot Downeast-style center-console. I love the mountainous regions, the ocean, and I like to visit cities.

Other than that that I’ve mentioned, I really enjoy cooking, chilling in front of the television sometimes, walks with my wife, the seasons — all of them — and life in general. I’m thankful for what I have and regularly thank the powers-that-be, so to speak, for my blessings.

I did promise I’d tell you more about my first company, so here goes: I run a small New Hampshire corporation I founded in 1992 called The Green Spot Ltd. It was initially a greenhouse and nursery business, that is until opportunities presented themselves, then it took a turn. We sell good bugs now which eat or kill bad bugs, so people don’t have to use pesticides. It is the most significant form of Integrated Pest Management (IPM). It’s used by commercial growers — both organic and conventional — government, universities, research greenhouses, botanical gardens, zoos, landscapers, interiorscapers (the folks who take care of the plants at your local shopping mall), farmers, and even some home gardeners. IPM is comprised of multiple practices I collectively call the Green Methods™ and it beats the hell out of spraying poisons everywhere.

I am also half of a web hosting partnership, GBHXonline.com, under the umbrella of my corporation, with a good friend, Scott Hege. It was his idea, actually, I just went along for the ride. Next thing you know, I became the creative force behind the company while Scott excels at all things technical. The guy is quite the brain. It’s really an honor working with him. Comforting, too, as I have someone to turn to when I become befuddled by some computer thing. And believe me, it does happen. Scott always seems to be able to find the answer. The creative portion of the partnership was unplanned, but working on the web has caused one thing to lead to the next. That’s when I started doing web design. Since that time I have learned a great deal on the subject. It’s funny, it seems like it was just yesterday that I was an internet hater. A super fast broadband connection, however, changed all that. Now I spend hours online doing one thing or another.

The whole web design thing is all for the good. I have been studying it with the zeal and passion I had when I started my first company. I’m doing it out of the love on one hand. On the other hand, it’s a back-up plan — my “Plan B,” if you will. It’s great, this web design thing I do. I love it. As I once wrote…

Doing web design and digital imagery is thrilling to say the least. It’s like someone handed me this nifty box of crayons. And get this: they have super powers. — Me

Photo by Rob Sylvan And that’s how I feel. I’ve always had a huge imagination and a creative streak a mile wide. Doing this allows me to put my creative powers to good use — more so than ever. I’ve been doing web design since June, 2004 (pretty much since the formation of GBHXonline.com), and I think I’ve progressed nicely. I tend to do well with any new venture when my heart is in it. And my heart is definitely in this (a possible and probable understatement, to say the least). What’s ahead I have no idea, but time will tell. Do expect to hear more about me. I will keep you posted — literally. ;)

The future looks bright. I cross my fingers and hope that it becomes so. After all, I’m not the one really in charge of things. I understand this and accept it fully. One can only hope.

Oh, my, now I’m into digital and stock photography, too. Weee.

Respectfully,
Mike Cherim
